Three days of merriment
Gardiki | The invisible fortress
The vast majority of the villagers are Aromanians (Vlachs). The main square is the largest in the region and hosts a large three-day celebration on 15 August, the day of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. On the first day the icon of the Virgin Mary is brought beneath the plane tree in the main square and is “auctioned off” with all proceedings going to the maintenance of the church. The next day, groups of unmarried young men visited the houses of the community singing traditional songs. It was a thinly veiled opportunity for them to look at beautiful unmarried girls with the purpose of asking their hands in marriage the next day.
