In the summer of 2006, the exhibition of sculptor Yiannis Parmakelis (b.1932), entitled “Mechanics 1978-2006”, part of which was the piece “Fruit” (2006), was presented. The work is a prominent example of the practice of sculpting followed by Parmakelis after 1978 and is based on a new iconographic vocabulary based on geometry, the impeccable perfection of construction and a harmony with the surrounding space. His themes are variant, showing a particular predilection to the human figure and its morphoplastic vocabulary. This work formally reminds of an apple, which apart from essential nourishment for human survival, is a fruit having obtained multiple symbolic meanings throughout human history, such as, the seed of knowledge in the garden of Eden. Thus, Parmakelis, creates a work of art that reflects on human nature.
