Column
Yiannis Parmakelis
In the summer of 2006, the exhibition of sculptor Yiannis Parmakelis (b.1932), entitled “Mechanics 1978-2006”, part of which was the piece “Column” (2006), was presented. The work is a prominent example of the practice of sculpting followed by Parmakelis after 1978 and is based on a new iconographic vocabulary based on geometry, constructivist compositions, and various formal and typologic combinations. Made of metal, as most of the artist’s sculptures, it maintains the traditional formal appearance of a column combined with Parmakelis’ morphoplastic idiom, which is characterized by utterly contemporary, expressionist, geometric and constructivist statements in various formal and typologic combinations. As a matter of fact, one could argue that Parmakelis comes into contact with an entirely Greek element, the ancient pillars, and imports it to the present. However, while forging a contemporary shape and substance, he also imports to the present the anthropocentric values of antiquity.
