The port of Preveza
We do not know when exactly Preveza was founded, but there was nothing here in the Middle Ages. The town is mentioned for the first time in a history text written by an unknown writer in the 14th century, the “Chronicle of the Morea”; it is a narrative of the operations of the Byzantine Emperor against the rebel Despot of Epirus, in 1292. The Byzantines landed in “Prevesan” and raided the area. According to an opinion, though, this Preveza is not a settlement but the name of a place. The most popular theory is that the name comes from the Slavic word “perevoz” (passage). As the years went by, it became a port of strategic significance.
