A calm suicide
The house of the poet Kostas Karyotakis
On 18 June 1928 a ship arrives in Preveza. It carries Kostas Karyotakis, the son of an affluent family, born in Tripolis in Arcadia. He is a lawyer, a poet, a story writer. He arrives on an unfavorable transfer to work in the Department for the Resettlement of Asia Minor Refugees of the Preveza Prefecture. He rents a house in Dardanelion Street near Seitan Bazaar. One month later, in the afternoon, Karyotakis enjoys a sour cherry juice in the seaside coffee shop called “The Heavenly Garden” (Ouranios Kipos). He asks for a cigarette and a piece of paper. When he finishes writing, he leaves; but he doesn't go far. He stands in the shade of a eucalyptus tree and shoots himself through the heart.
