A mysterious letter
The house of the poet Kostas Karyotakis
In a letter he kept in his pocket, Karyotakis accounts for his actions in a dark, self-sarcastic, and ambivalent way: “And to change the tone. I counsel all who know how to swim never to attempt suicide by drowning. I fought with the waves for ten hours through the night. I swallowed lots of water, but every now and then, without realizing how, my mouth broke the surface of the sea. Perhaps, one day, when I have the chance, I will write the impressions of a drowned man”. This letter did not really shed any light on the reasons for his suicide. Scholars and admirers continue to debate the events. What is certain is that the poet’s death was intimately and permanently associated with the town, even though he only lived there for 33 days.
