The Turks and the Venetians seemed to play with Preveza. The town and the castles changed sides all the time and every time the new conqueror left his mark on them. Its-Kale was built by the Turks in 1701. In 1717 it was occupied by the Venetians, who turned the mosque into a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Andrew. In 1806 the Turks were back; naturally they built a new and larger mosque to replace the Greek Orthodox church within the castle walls, while the Roman Catholic church becomes a powder magazine. They also place a plaque on the southeast bastion with the inscription “May Allah guard us”. The competition between the Christian saint and the god of Islam ends in 1956 with the construction of a chapel dedicated to Saint Andrew.
