The invisible fortress
Fortress of St. Andreas
A long time ago the entrance to the Gulf of Preveza (the so-called Bouka) was guarded by the Fortress of Bouka. It was probably built in 1477-1478, during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II, but the Venetians blew it up in 1701 in order not to surrender it to the Turks. The walls were destroyed but we have some pictures and written descriptions. The Ottoman traveller Evliya Çelebi, in 1670, speaks about 100 one and two-storey houses, crowded and without gardens, with narrow and dark alleys, all crammed within the fortress walls. He also mentions a resident who was an excellent maker of music organs. And if today the fortress of Bouka is invisible, you can still see it in Pisa, since it was painted on the ceiling of the Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri church.
