The genuine child of Ali Pasha
Fortress of St. George
One of the newest additions to the fortifications of Preveza is Yeni Kale, erected by Ali Pasha on the south side of the trench that protects the town, towards the sea. It was definitely an innovative construction at the time and rises among the verdant flora. It is also known as the Fortress of Saint George because of the church that stood on this site. The leaning walls protects an interior courtyard and is a typical feature of Ali Pasha’s fortifications. The curtain wall and the bastions remain almost intact. Ali, the Ottoman “Buonaparte” as he was called, would be proud if he could see his stone child still standing as a reminder to all visitors of his strong personality, his boundless ambition, and his ruthless and violent era.
