Sandy nursery
Monolithi
The ecosystem of the Ambracian Gulf is paradise for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). The warm waters of the gulf combine with the fresh waters of the rivers Arachthos and Louros to create an environment rich in nutrients that attracts jellyfish, the turtles’ favorite meal. This delectable treat, combined with the number of fish, offers loggerhead sea turtles the nutritious meals they require to get strong before they embark on their long journey. They prefer to lay their eggs on specific beaches; Monolithi is one of them. Their eggs remain buried in the warm sand for 7 to 10 weeks. When the time comes, dozens of hatchlings appear on the surface and make a mad dash for the sea guided by the light of the stars.
