Out with the old, in with the new
The Archaeological Museum of Nicopolis
We are in the 3rd-4th century CE. The once mighty Roman Empire is on the brink of collapse. The western borders suffer from barbarian invasions, the Roman legions are defeated, the financial and intellectual elites move to the east. Eventually even the capital moves from Rome to Constantinople, and the Emperor Constantine permits the establishment of a new religion, Christianity. These changes are reflected on a special exhibit at the museum; it is a marble cylindrical pedestal with a relief depicting the mythical battle between the Amazons and the Athenians. This Roman pedestal once supported a bronze statue but was then reused as the pulpit of a Christian church. The visible part of the relief was carved off and then covered with a Christian mosaic. The charging warriors of antiquity were replaced by a series of peaceful figures of Christian saints.
