On the footsteps of Alexander the Great
Ancient Nicopolis
Octavian, the adopted son of Julius Caesar, faces the waters that spread before the narrow, fertile piece of land that separates the Ambracian Gulf from the Ionian Sea. Enemy shipwrecks are everywhere. To honour the site of his great victory and to ensure that its memory would live forever he founded a Roman city equal to his triumph. He will call it the “City of Victory” (Nicopolis). He will not be the first one to do so. Alexander the Great set the example when he founded the Nicopolis of Syria, following his victory over the Persians at the battle of Issus. Octavian envisions a city that will control western Greece (with the help of Patras) and will help Romanize the new conquests in the East, while projecting his political propaganda.
