A small “Rome”
Ancient Nicopolis
Nicopolis needs citizens and Octavian brings them here from important urban centers throughout Epirus and the neighbouring island of Lefkas. He also brings Roman settlers, veterans and landless peasants who supported him in Italy. As it happens with this mixture of populations, the town itself combines the Greek tradition with the innovations of Roman architecture. It has a theater, an odeum, and a gymnasium but it is organized according to the Roman system of two large paved thoroughfares (cardo and decumanus maximus). At their intersection lies the forum, while the city blocks (insulae) are arrayed on either side of these streets. The town also has fountains, baths, and an impressive aqueduct that reinforces the Roman atmosphere of Nicopolis.
