The house of the Ekdikos Georgios
The archaeologists have solved many of the riddles associated with the “Royal House”. It is a wealthy building complex that combines two types of Roman residences: an urban house and a seaside mansion. The main entrance faced the decumanus maximus, the city’s principal paved thoroughfare. Small apartments radiated from it and were probably occupied by commercial enterprises or workshops belonging to the owner of the building. It had many rooms dedicated to various purposes including an atrium, baths, an office, a large semi-circular tank and a garden full of plants and a small fountain or pond with waterlilies. There were three different dining rooms (triclinia), one for each season (summer, fall, winter). The owners enjoyed their meals in the coolest or warmest room, depending on the time of the year.
