To the accompaniment of music
The Odeum
The Odeum was erected in the second half of the 2nd century CE in the center of Roman Nicopolis. It was a busy and beloved building. Its architecture is reminiscent of ancient Greek theaters because the sitting area for the audience is semicircular. But, contrary to a theater, this odeum (as all others in antiquity) had a roof. The beautiful and well-built Odeum of Nicopolis served as a meeting place for the upper strata of society; here they could attend concerts but also engage in a variety of other activities. Under the roof of an odeum the Romans organized musical events, poetic contests, theatrical performances, pantomimes, and public gatherings.
