A pious emperor
The victory monument of Actium
When the battle of Actium was over, the triumphant Octavian raised a trophy on the hill where his headquarters were. This glorious complex consisted of two artificial levels. The first contained proof of his victory: 36 bronze rams from the captured ships of Antony and Cleopatra. The second level supported a triple stoa. In the center stood a monumental altar decorated with scenes of a Roman triumph (perhaps the battle of Actium). Clay planting pots indicate the presence of a garden. This design wanted to impart a strong message of piety on behalf of the emperor, who clearly had the support of the gods.
