The Roman aqueduct
The new city requires water. This will come through an aqueduct from the headwaters of the river Louros in the village of Agios Georgios. These sources are so rich in water that even today they cover the needs of Arta, Preveza, and Lefkas. The wondrous Roman project, a major achievement of hydraulics and engineering, follows a course of 50 km before it reaches Nicopolis. The aqueduct follows a consistent downward path so that the water reaches the town with the necessary pressure. Along the way it encounters gorges, ravines, hills and valleys, always adapting to the landscape. Sometimes it is carved on the side of the hill or it becomes a tunnel or stands on a row of piers; occasionally it even goes underground.
