A paradise in mosaic
Basilica A
Nicopolis was shrinking but it was still a vibrant city, as evidenced by the erection of a basilica in the south quarter of the city. A basilica was a type of an elongated public building. The early Christians borrowed this architectural type for their churches and adapted it to their needs. The faithful who cross the monumental main entrance encounter a paved courtyard. There are three porticos around it, adorned with impressive mosaics depicting animals and plants. More impressive mosaics are located on the walls, the narthex, the main church, the outbuildings. Some of them have survived and enchant us with their exquisite art.
