Dometius times two
Basilica A
Basilica A, as it was called by the archaeologists, is also known as the “Basilica of Bishop Dometius”; but there were two men with this name. Inscriptions on the mosaic floors of the basilica reveal the details of this story: the first Dometius built it in the middle of the 6th century. A little bit later, in the third quarter of the same century, his namesake replacement completed the wonderful mosaics. In the two inscriptions, composed in dactylic hexameter, the name of the two bishops has been altered to Doumetios to conform to the needs of the hexameter.
