Necromanteion or farmhouse?
The Necromanteion of Acheron
In the middle of the 1950s the archaeologist who excavated this hill, near the River Acheron, discovered a building dated to the 4th-2nd century BCE. Its architecture, the subterranean crypt, the meandering corridors with the three gates, the statuettes of Persephone (beloved wife to the lord of the Underworld) convinced the archaeologist in charge of the excavations that he had discovered the Necromanteion of Acheron, the sacred site where people communicated with the souls of the departed. But there is another opinion based on a different set of findings; the numerous farming tools, the fishing equipment, the domestic pottery, the grinding mills. According to this theory, we are dealing with a fortified farmhouse. In the main room there are seven catapults, ready to use. But they did not have the chance. The farmhouse is set on fire by the invading Romans.
