Gothic style hut
Kazantzakis' hut
The hut was built on an estate owned by Andreas Exarchouleas (now owned by Dimitrios G. Exarchouleas), made of cheap materials: woods, reeds, straw and oil cans. Kazantzakis asked for the door and the window to be made in an arched shape, according to his beloved Gothic style and the tendency of man to climb high to glimpse the face of God. The interior was very simply furnished. A cot made of tripods and planks, woven sheets, a desk, an old chair, a lamp, a pitcher of water, a boiling ring to brew sage, a brazier, books and a framed picture of Tolstoy. These were what the great thinker needed in order to create. Outside, there was a fireplace where Zorba often lit a fire and cooked.
