Rock-soup
Kazantzakis' hut
The testimony of Katerina Exarchoulea continues:
"Zorbas would sometimes prank him. He asked him once so persistently what to cook and Mr. Nikos was absorbed with his book, so to get rid of him he says:
Boil rocks.
And that clown listened to him and did boil rocks. When Mr. Nikos put his book aside after a while, he asked him:
What are we going to eat, George?
Come on, boss, I just cooked a special rock-soup! Sit down to eat!
Zorbas was a good cook. He used to make bazina (porridge of corn meal) and he stirred it with a strange wooden ladle that he had brought from Mount Athos. When he left, he left it to me."
