Bankruptcy
Dutch East India Company
Although Rembrandt was earning quite well, he liked to spend his money, too. He was buying paintings from other painters and was collecting exotic goods, like precious stones, busts of Roman emperors etc. That lifestyle eventually led him to bankruptcy.
He had to sell his house (today's Rembrandt House Museum), furniture, paintings and his collection of rarities.
When they were selling them, they've made an inventory list of all the items that were in his house. Later on, that list helped the researchers from the Rembrandt House Museum to decorate it in its original way.
