The Draper's Guild
The Drapers' Guild
In Rembrandt’s time, the old building on number 7 was the office of the Draper's Guild. It's members would meet and inspect the quality of the textile they've received from their suppliers. Any fabric coming to Amsterdam first had to be inspected here, before it could be sold anywhere in the city. In 1662, members of this guild have commissioned their group portrait from Rembrandt. He painted them sitting around the table while they were evaluating the quality of textile. Famous painting was first displayed in their guild house here. However, later on it found it's place in a collection of the Rijksmuseum. And you can see it there today.
