In 1995, the work represented Greece at the Venice Biennale, and in 1997 it was installed at the Thessaloniki waterfront when the Greek city was designated European Capital of Culture. In 2013, it was eventually relocated at the city’s remodeled seafront promenade becoming a national landmark. It stands on a wooden platform, properly lit, and surrounded by small water fountains, as water had always been an integral element of the artist’s work. In 1998, Zongolopoulos created a similar 9m sculpture for Psychiko, the Athens neighborhood were he lived most of his life. It has become the landmark entrance to Psychiko-Filothei areas on Kifissias Avenue. In 2018, sculptors Leonidas and Stelios Gikas were commissioned by the George Zongolopoulos Foundation to create another copy of the Umbrellas to be placed at the historical El Alamein Hotel in Egypt.
