The hidden letters
Diaphragm, 1973 | Diaphragm, 2000
Its main features are geometry, rhythm, and the repetition of rectangles with alternating visual patterns. By taking a closer look, one can spot three letters of the Greek alphabet (Γ, O, and Z), included in the artist’s name; a typical example of the sculptor’s playfulness. Among other hidden elements concerning this sculpture is the fact that when Zongolopoulos was numbering his sketches for the alternating visual patterns, he had also noted each pattern’s coordinates referencing their height and length within the installation, which shows how meticulously he had studied the work before its construction.
