The Arch of Septimius Severus
The Romans were always grateful to the warriors who had given glory to Rome. Roman arches were built by order of the Senate to honor those who had won great military campaigns earning fame and moments of triumph for the city and Empire. This Arch was awarded to Emperor Septimius Severus and his two sons, Caracalla and Geta, after their two victories over Rome’s greatest enemy, the Parthian Empire, which once occupied the territory of present-day Iraq and Iran.
