All roads lead to Rome
The main square
In the days of monarchy, around the 7th century BC, the Forum and its Main Square was merely a marketplace, a place where people came to sell and buy cattle and herbs. As the Republic transformed, though, so did the role of the Forum; it eventually became the pulsating heart of Roman political, juridical and financial life, the open space of the Main Square holding, naturally, the most prominent role. Many important roads connected the Forum to the rest of the city and the rest of the Empire. It seems that, indeed, “All roads led to Rome”, and of course where else than straight to its heart, the Forum’s main square.
