The Basilica of Maxentius is one of the last great civil constructions that appeared in the Forum. It was actually outside the original Forum area, although it’s part of the archaeological complex today. It was built towards the beginning of the 4th century AD and was also known as Basilica Nova and Basilica of Constantine. Yet, as the Empire’s strength dwindled down the name was lost to time, and in the Middle Ages it was simply known as Templum Urbis, meaning the "temple of the city".
