Let’s get weaving!
Spindle Whorls with Painted Decoration
Clay spindle whorls were another common dedication to the sanctuary of the Nymph. Athenian women were responsible for the manufacture of cloth and clothing for the entire family. Young women spent most of their time processing wool. Cleaning, combing, and spinning were burdensome but necessary tasks that ensured the self-sufficiency of the Athenian household. It took a month to prepare the wool, seven days to set up the loom, and a few days to weave a simple garment. More elaborate pieces of clothing required even more time. Long before they married, girls learned the necessary skills; after all the peplos of the goddess Athena was prepared by girls between the ages of seven and eleven.
