An Archaic mystery
The Peplos Kore
Clothes don’t make the man, but sometimes it pays to study carefully what someone is wearing. The Peplos Kore was named after the peplos (a simple, long, woolen cloth) that early scholars thought she wore. As it turns out, she is wearing four different garments, one of which was reserved solely for goddesses. She is therefore not a mortal, but then again, which goddess is she? The attribute held in her missing left arm would have enabled viewers to immediately identify her, but to us, she remains a mystery. The Kore is 1.18m tall (3.87 ft) and her body and hair were painted with bright colours. She also wears the “archaic smile”, an indication perhaps that she is alive and in a state of well-being.
