The Chian Kore
Just a few steps from the Peplos Kore stands a girl from the island of Chios. This Kore wears the light linen Ionian chiton and a heavier himation (mantle), the garments of choice for fashionable women of the late 6th century BCE. She is grasping part of her chiton in her left hand to lift it off the ground as she is ready to start walking. The garment had lavish, bright colors, and intricate decorative patterns that enhanced the overall sense of elegance, grace, and luxury. These are typical attributes of the more relaxed Ionian way of life that contrasted sharply to the austere and plain Doric way (exemplified by the harsh life at Sparta).
