Say no to bird droppings
The Kritios Boy
The Kritios Boy is among the most famous ancient Greek marble statues. It is the earliest extant free-standing sculpture to break with the formula of the Archaic kouros through the alternation of weight-bearing and free legs. The statue is less than life-size (1.167 m.) and may depict a victorious athlete. The eyes were inserted into another material. The statue has an impressive hairstyle with traces of red paint in the grooves between the rolls of hair on the back side on the right of the head. There are also traces of a bronze rod at the top of the head that may have supported a meniscus i.e. a bronze disk to prevent bird droppings from accumulating on a statue that was exposed to the elements.
