The student of Phidias
Procne and Itys
The sculptor Alcamenes was born in Athens and was a pupil of Phidias. In this case, the apple didn't fall far from the tree, for the student was almost as famous as the teacher. He lived a long productive life, dying at the age of 70 (or thereabouts). His most famous work is the “Aphrodite of the Gardens”, a statue that received its last polish by Phidias himself. Pausanias, the famous geographer who visited Athens in the 2nd century CE, mentions the sculpture of Procne we see in the Acropolis Museum. Among the many statues and wonderful dedications on the Acropolis, he saw “Procne...who has already made up her mind about the boy, and Itys as well – a group dedicated by Alcamenes”.
