The Lenormant Relief
The so-called Lenormant relief was discovered by the French archaeologist François Lenormant on the Acropolis in 1856. It was carved in 400 BCE and represents a trireme, the most technologically advanced military machine created by the ancient Athenians. The fragment at the Acropolis Museum depicts the starboard side of the warship at the moment nine visible rowers put their weight into the stroke. Other fragments (some of them now lost) allow the reconstruction of 25 oarsmen, an officer, and some passengers, while the foot of a much larger figure above the trireme may have been the tribal hero Paralos. The ship has been identified as the “Paralus”, one of the two Athenian sacred ships.
