The sculptural proposition
Monument of Gorgopotamos, 1985
Zongolopoulos envisioned an abstract symbol without melodrama: a metallic sphere formed by transparent vertically and horizontally intersecting lines; a sculpture with rectangular metal plates in the sphere’s center that would sound like gongs with the force of the wind.
“Horizontal and vertical stainless steel tubes on a grid will form a sphere. Projected in space, this transparent trompe l’oeil effect will make the sculpture look lighter, in conversation with the surrounding wild landscape. Ten stainless steel plates, differing in thickness, will be hanging within the sphere forming its core, a reference to the Greek monasteries’ semantra. Young people or musicians will use these gongs-semantra annually to perform musical compositions specifically created to echo, each time, a different soundscape in the universe, in order to mark the anniversary of the Gorgopotamos Bridge explosion.”
