Entering the arena
The arena
The Colosseum’s arena was oval-shaped, as was common in Roman amphitheatres. It was made of bricks and wood and then covered in sand, which absorbed the blood effectively and was easy to clean and be replaced. Nowadays, just a small part of the arena is still covered in sand, so that visitors can get an idea of what the place would have looked like back in the 1st century AD.
