Jubilee
The Holy Door
A Holy Door is traditionally an entrance portal in a basilica. It is ceremoniously opened during Jubilee years designated by the Pope, for pilgrims. The concept of a Jubilee is a long-standing Biblical tradition which originates in the book of Leviticus. The name comes from the Hebrew word qeren ha-yobhel, which means horn of a ram. After 7 Sabbath years, the horn would be blown and announce a Jubilee, a year of atonement. A jubilee was a time marked by personal liberty, restitution of property, during which people lived on the bounty that had accumulated up until that point in time. The concept is similar today. The door is only opened every 25 years, and it is a time of reflection and repentance. By attending Mass, going to confession, and making a pilgrimage through the door when one is detached from all inclination of sin. During a Jubilee, only the Holy Doors are open, and the Doors are only opened during a Jubilee.
