England’s Last Catholic Dynasty
The Vatican Grottoes
The last members of England’s Catholic royal dynasty lie here: James II and his two sons are buried in the same tomb. James III died in Rome, and Charles Edward died in Florence: they had lived under Papal protection. This tomb dates to 1938. It is situated to the left, between the tombs of Cardinal Merry del Val and Pope Innocent XIII. James II had been usurped and driven away from England in 1688. The inscription reads, ‘To James III, son of King James II of Great Britain, to Charles Edward and Henry, Dean of the Cardinal Fathers, sons of James III, the last of the Royal House of Stuart. 1819.’
