The allegory
Aesop, Basel 1524
The content of Aesop's fables is allegorical and didactic. Using animals as the protagonists of his stories, he delivers lessons of ethics and virtue to his contemporaries in a humorous manner, condemning weaknesses and flaws such as laziness, arrogance, and greed. He himself didn’t write anything down, but his stories were preserved through oral tradition over the centuries. The first edition of Aesop's fables was printed in 1479 in Milan. The present edition of the Library is the second in a series by the Froben publishing house in Basel, in 1524. The text is accompanied by a Latin translation, a preface of the publisher, and Aesop's biography as written by Planoudis.
