The Handwritten Letter
Kolokotronis’s Manuscript
When the Turks capitulated in 1823, they departed from Nafplio leaving the houses in poor condition, except those of Petrompeis and Kolokotronis, who, according to Byron's companion, M.Schilizzi, had neither door nor window. In the same year, there was a massive settlement with residents from almost all of Greece. This is how Nafplio's prominent figures arrive in the race -staying in the now repaired and well-maintained houses- as well as merchants, officials, craftsmen, and soldiers, who rent smaller houses in less good condition. The financial condition of the tenant determined the amount of rent and the type of accommodation they could afford to stay in. On January 14, 1823, General Kolokotronis from Nafplio sent a letter to A. Kanellopoulos and Gr. Salas on "Proof of renting a National Laboratory in Nafplio". He mentions that the agreed amount was 2000 grosz, of which he received 1000 himself, and in the following semester they would receive the remaining amount. He even emphasized the importance of having a receipt as evidence to avoid any injustice or dispute.
