The Trial
Kolokotronis’s Manuscript
Kolokotronis was a supporter of Kapodistrias. After the assassination of the 2nd, he was among those who helped overthrow Otho. But his political opponents accused him of treason and dragged him to trial with Plapoutas, the other leading figure of the Revolution. The indictment contained ambiguities, and in his apology, among other things, when asked about his profession he said, “Military. I have been holding a rifle for forty-nine years and fighting for the homeland”, which his opponents admired, changing the impending death penalty into a 20-year sentence in the famous Palamidi prison in Nafplio. He was then released by royal pardon. He died at the age of 73, suffering a stroke that same night, after the wedding of one of his sons.
