By Alcamenes’s Hand
The Centauromachy Metope
The temple’s frieze was created by Alcamenes. Alcamenes was a sculptor originating from Limnos, who lived during the 5th century BC and was a disciple of Phidias. His skills were remarkable, as evidenced by his works that adorned some of the most important monuments. His famous works were the gold and ivory statue from the temple of Dionysus, Aphrodite of the Gardens, Procne and Itys, as well as the frieze of the temple of Apollo at Bassae, whose frieze consisted of 23 marble plates, 11 dedicated to the battle of the Centaurs and Lapiths, and 12 dedicated to the battle of the Amazons and Athenians.
