Food and comfort
The school
Since 1931, school meals have been provided. Food was offered to students-some of them were abandoned by their families- in an attempt to avoid malnutrition, hunger, and stabilize their academic performance. The school settlement reopened in 1947. After the Occupation, most of the children were weakened, visibly emaciated, and prone to illness. Every morning before class, their mothers-in turn- were serving milk, provided by the Ulen &Company. Occasionally, milk was sometimes served with freshly baked warm cookies, a treat prepared by the school janitor’s wife.
